The way credit card acceptance works is a merchant submits a credit card transaction to an authorizing agency for payment authorization on behalf of a customer, via a secure connection.  The authorizing agency receives the transaction information and passes it on via a secure connection to the Merchant’s Bank processor.  Then the Merchant’s Bank processor submits the financial transaction to the Credit Card Interchange (the CCI is a network of financial companies that correspond to control the processing, clearing, and settlement of credit card transactions).  The CCI then directs the transaction to the customer’s Credit Card Issuer.  The CCI will either approve or decline the transaction depending on the customer’s available balance of funds and then forward the results of the transaction.  If the transaction is then approved the correct amount of funds is released back through the CCI to cover the transaction.  The CCI will then forward the appropriate funds for the transaction to the Merchant’s Bank.  They will then deposit the appropriate amount of funds into the merchant’s bank account.  The CCI then relays the financial transaction results to the Merchant’s Bank processor and they in turn relay the transaction information to the authorizing agency.  The authorizing agency will store the results of the transaction and will send the information to the customer and the merchant.  This whole process is done in less then three seconds.  Generally, the funds deposited into the merchant’s bank account will show up within two to four business days.
